Cyprus

Cyprus is the third largest Mediterranean island and one of the most popular tourist destinations, attracting over 2.4 million tourists per year. Cyprus is one of the advanced economies in the region and became a member of the European Union on 1 May 2004. Cyprus is a modern country that effortlessly marries European culture with unforgettable links to the past. Here, visitors can discover a compact world of clean beaches and rugged mountain peaks, vineyards studded with olive trees and ancient ruins that stir the imagination.

Travelling documentation

Documentation required for entering Cyprus depends on your nationality. A valid passport is required for a stay up to 90 days for all tourists except citizens of European Union countries. Some non-EU third country nationals require a visa. More information can be obtained from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (http://www.mfa.gov.cy).

Language  

Main languages spoken in Cyprus are Greek for Greek-Cypriots and Turkish for Turkish-Cypriots communities. English is widely spoken. Within the tourist industry French, German and Russian are also well spoken.

Health Care system

Medical treatment and assistance in Cyprus is offered free of charge to tourists in case of emergency at the Accident and Emergency Department Government Hospital and Health Institutions. Holiday makers can also use their health insurance towards their medical expenses, provided the policy covers the length of their stay on the island

Currency

As from 1st of January 2008 the Cyprus pound has been replaced by the Euro (as the legal tender money of Cyprus).

Climate and weather

Cyprus is characterized by year-round clear skies and sunshine. The climate is hot during summer period, starting in mid-May and lasting until mid-September (average temperature of 26-38°C), with mild winters from November to mid-March (average temperature of 5-18°C). Spring and autumn are very short intervals in between and are characterized by mild and pleasant weather.
