Ovum Donation

Our Ovum Donation program has been running since 1990. The potential recipient has the choice of proposing their own donor or Pedieos IVF Center may find one for their approval on an anonymous basis and with a maximum waiting period of three months.

Ovum donation can be done by sharing eggs of a women undergoing IVF treatment or receiving the donated eggs from an approved donor.

Only a short time (less than 4 days) is necessary for a recipient from abroad to stay in Cyprus for this treatment

Our dedicated egg donors are:

(i) Fully tested for sexually transmissible diseases (HIV, HBsAg, anti-HBc, HCV, VDRL)

(ii) Under the age of 34 years

(iii) From healthy family background

(iv) From various ethnic origins

The success rate of Ovum Donation is very high

Which women are candidates for the Ovum Donation program?

Those with:

•Primary ovarian failure

•Premature menopause

•Ovarian damage following surgery, radiation or chemotherapy

• An inheritable genetic disorder

• Repeated failure to respond to ovarian stimulation in an IVF program

The procedure in simple words

The recipient’s menstrual cycle (if she is menstruating) must be synchronised with the donor’s menstrual cycle. In order to achieve this, the recipient receives a hormonal replacement therapy which allows the manipulation of her cycle accordingly to the donor’s cycle. The donated oocytes are then fertilised with the sperm of the recipient’s partner or donor sperm where indicated. Fertilised and healthy looking embryos are then transferred to the recipient’s womb which has been hormonally prepared to accept and nurture the embryo. Extra embryos can be cryopreserved and stored in PEDIEOS CRYO BANK for use in a future cycle if the recipient wishes to do so.

Matching Process

The prospective recipient completes a form providing details of both her and her partner’s characteristics in order to register with the ovum donation program. The program coordinator will then try to match the couple with a potential donor according to their characteristics, hair colour, height, weight, blood type and skin colour. No photos of the donors are available at any stage. Donors remain anonymous to the recipient, and vice versa, unless a recipient recruits a donor of her own. Recipients are given the direct line of the coordinator and they can communicate directly regarding any queries they have about the program.
