About the treatment

Pedieos IVF Center is a pioneer in IVF Treatment, Embryo Development and Egg Freezing in Cyprus. Established in 1986 by Dr. Krinos M. Trokoudes, our center was the first in the country to practice IVF, and has had a tremendous influence on the field of reproductive medicine in both Cyprus and Greece.

We believe that our practice is one of the best in the world, which is why we are confident to offer the guarantees that we do. We make it our priority to uphold the highest level of quality at all stages of your journey to creating a family.

IVF with egg donor

Egg Donation

IVF with Egg Donor is used by women who are unable to use their own eggs to have a baby. These are some of the reasons a woman would need to use Egg Donation.

  • Primary ovarian failure or menopause
  • Ovarian damage following surgery, radiation or chemotherapy
  • An inheritable genetic disorder
  • Repeated failure to respond to ovarian stimulation in an IVF program

Success Rates

Our pregnancy rates for IVF treatments using fresh and frozen donor eggs in 2019 were 79%. The graph on the right demonstrates our pregnancy success rates over the years for Pedieos IVF, using fresh and frozen eggs. We are comparing our results to the latest pregnancy rates released by SART (Society For Assisted Reproductive Technology) in the USA (2018) which combines the reported results from all centers in the US performing IVF treatments with fresh and frozen donor eggs.

Our Donors

We have a diverse pool of donor ethnicities thanks to the unique geographic position of Cyprus and the presence of a large multiethnic group of people of reproductive age. Our donors are screened, examined and tested in a strict process.

History

Pedieos IVF Center has been involved with ovum donation from the beginning of its IVF history. In a breakthrough success the Guiness book of World Records published our achievement in 1992

Oldest mother to have delivered following IVF: A Woman aged 49 years 54 days (b. Cyprus) gave birth by Caesarean section to a baby girl 2850 g 101 oz in October 1990. The fertilized egg had been implanded in the patient’s womb under the supervision of Dr Krinos Trokoudes, Director of the Pedieos IVF Center in Nicosia, Cyprus.

Guarantees

We offer the following packages with guarantee of minimum oocyte performance, provided that the sperm meets the World Health Organisation (WHO) criteria for normality and the thawing process is correct.

Routine Blood Tests

Blood group, AMH, Thalassemia, Sickle Cell Anemia, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, HIV, Syphilis, Chlamydia (PCR), Gonorrhoea (PCR), and CMV.

These are donors in our database with low remaining number of eggs due to high demand; most of them also have proven fertility. Some of these donors have both 250 genetic tests and Routine Blood Tests but others only have Routine Blood Tests.

When the guarantee is for 1 or 2 blastocysts, or Day-3 embryos, this is the minimum we guarantee, but of course there could be more embryos created. If more embryos than the guaranteed number are created, they will of course be offered to the recipient at no extra charge.

If fewer embryos than the number guaranteed are created, for example 1 blastocyst instead of 2, then the recipient has two options: either take the 1 blastocyst and pay less or we can use more eggs until at least 2 blastocysts are created. If there are zero embryos created, then the recipient has no financial obligations to Pedieos IVF Center.

Anonymity

All countries have different rules and regulations regarding anonymity for IVF with Egg Donor treatment. In countries that require donors to be anonymous, the offspring and parents do not have access to the donor’s identity at any point in time. With non-anonymous donors (or open donors) the offspring (but not the parents) can request for the donor’s identifying information at a certain age (14, 16 or 18 years old).

Sperm and egg banks around the world are obligated to follow the rules of each country when they ship gametes to be used for embryo creation and transfer. For IVF with Egg Donor treatment, Pedieos IVF follows this policy when dealing with patients from other countries. Patients treated in Cyprus must comply with anonymous donation rules.

Use of whole donor by one recipient

We discourage the use of a whole donor by a single recipient for the following reasons:

  1. Patients worldwide, are usually interested in having one or two babies from IVF with Egg Donation treatment. This target is fully satisfied by creating 1-3 embryos of good quality, which in turn means that usually fewer than 10 eggs are needed.
  2. A good donor produces, on average, 16-20 eggs per donation. If all eggs are inseminated, a significant and unnecessary surplus number of embryos will be created but not used, resulting in an ethical dilemma for all.
  3. Finally, egg donors are not easy to find, therefore the less affluent recipients will not have access on an equal basis to this kind of treatmen

Age Limit

The age limit for IVF with Egg Donor is 50 years old. An application to the Board of Medically Assisted Reproduction can be made for women above this age for exemption.

Pre-implantation genetic testing of the embryos is available as an optional add-on upon request. There is a debate amongst experts as to whether such testing is useful in ovum donation, but the final conclusion has not yet been reached. These tests are performed on the embryos before the embryo transfer.

IVF with Egg donor

Our Process

IVF with egg donor

1. Donor – Recipient Matching

a. Phenotype Matching. You can now look for your own donor on our online database to find the perfect match based on your requirements. You can access the database here – Aphrodite Egg Bank. There are extensive filters that will help you find a donor that is suitable for you.

Alternatively, if you want one of our coordinators to find you a donor, you can fill out this form –  Form 2, detailing your own characteristics as well as the desired characteristics of the donor. This information, along with a few photos of yourselves will help the coordinator find the perfect donor match for you. A dedicated coordinator will send you the best-matching Donor Profiles to review. If you are not fully satisfied with the donors provided, the coordinator will continue to provide additional options for you until a donor is selected.

b. Genotype Matching. All our donors are tested for 302 recessive genes. The sperm provider can also be tested for the same number of genes in order to avoid the development of an embryo with any of the 302 genetic diseases. This today, is the ultimate of genetic testing in ovum donation treatment.

Egg donation Preparation

Preparation

If you decide to use fresh eggs, your cycle and that of the donor’s will be synchronised and stimulation will begin. This can be done under the supervision of our doctors at Pedieos IVF and the doctors at your local fertility center.

If you are using frozen eggs, you can start the preparation without the need of synchronisation with the donor.

Fertilisation & Embryo Transfer

3. Fertilisation & Embryo Transfer

Procedure at your local clinic. We collaborate with clinics all over the world so you can proceed with your IVF with Egg Donor treatment without leaving your country. Your local clinic will freeze and ship the sperm to us for fertilization and embryo creation. We will then freeze the embryos and ship them directly to your clinic for embryo transfer at your own convenience.

Procedure at Pedieos IVF Center. The intended parents come to Cyprus for 3-5 days. We take the fresh sperm sample and inseminate the donor eggs. Embryo development takes 3-5 days, at which point we perform the embryo transfer to place them in your womb. If the sperm provider is not able to travel, or the woman recipient wishes to come to Cyprus for a shorter period, we can coordinate with your clinic to freeze and ship the sperm before you arrive to Cyprus. That way, the embryos will already be developed so you can come to our clinic only on the day of embryo transfer, thus saving significant travelling time.
